Why EITM Europe?

In recent years, European Political Science has made enormous progress. European scholars created the European Political Science Association with an annual conference that attracts scholars with interest in studies of theoretical and empirical rigour. This progress has also been acknowledged by the American Political Science Association that moved the editorship of its flagship journal, the American Political Science Review, to Europe.

A major reason for this development is that research in Europe is published in major scholarly journals and university press, including the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, British Journal of Political Science, Cambridge University Press, Princeton University Press, Michigan University Press. This sends a strong signal to young political scientists in Europe, who are interested in learning the highest standard in formal and statistical modeling. Since 2009, the Summer Institute on the Empirical Implications of Theoretical Models (EITM) Europe offers training in the highest standard on the relationship between formal models of politics and statistical methods with focus on Europe at the University of Mannheim.

Compared to other summer schools, which focus either on statistical training or the empirical study, the EITM Europe aims to advance scholarship exhibiting more seamless integration of theoretical model development and empirical evaluation through a highly interactive training program. The EITM summer institute is led by distinguished scholars from across the discipline working at the forefront of such empirical-theoretical integration, with lectures on the application to the study of politics
